JW AUS TOUR SHADOW KITS

Something different for your merch table, crafted a stone’s throw from the venues. In principle a DIY kit of each location, splendidly JW stylised, available only at the respective shows in hyper limited numbers. Including a print, some stickers and a slightly interactive visual secret for those of us foolish enough to have exchanged our attention spans for a smart phone, or anyone with a pocket torch. Probably the former.

BALLARAT CIVIC HALL - December 6th

This is the venue for the first show, recently restored and reopening this month in the stunning gold rush country town of Ballarat. Possibly the most Third Man building I’ve ever seen. I hope it’s bathed in blue light and banners come December.

Here’s the kit version, would come on two panels of hand painted, pre-cut bamboo for the owner to build, as per usual. There are references to 6 tracks from the No Name album cut or etched into the model. Would come in a full-colour, pre-folded card sleeve with instructions.

However this time the kit is raised slightly to make space to slide the average torch-equipped smartphone underneath. The lasercut panels on the rear then act as stencils to project the gig details onto the wall behind, and the JW logo onto the ceiling above. The kit would come with a blue gel to create the blue light.

THE CORNER HOTEL - December 7th

The second venue for the Aus tour, what it lacks in gold rush grandeur it more than makes up for with remarkable TWS history. Beyond excited for this show.

And the kit, again, two sheets of pre-cut hand painted bamboo, plus 4 references to No Name tracks.

And same shadow concept for gig details and JW logo. Incidentally the blue gel is optional for the owner, you can use the torch as a white light which will be brighter, but somehow less fun.

BONUSES & CAVEATS

These are only rough prototypes, there may be some structural alterations if you decided you wanted them (and it’s more than fine if you don’t, I’ve been meaning to make a model of the Corner for years anyway). Would be improvements to the shadow typeface as well. Plus exchangeable panels for different shadow images, other TMR logos, or JW himself.

I’ve also very roughly sketched up a graphic of a Melbourne tram powered by a Tesla coil passing each venue, which I’ve split in two and if you went ahead with the kits I’d make them as 3-colour prints on my 1870s letterpress. The relevant one included in the respective kit. They’d be roughly the same size as the kit panels and the old handbills.

That’s probably enough of an uninvited sensory onslaught for now, let me know what you think……
